Discover Trattoria Amalfi

If you’ve ever driven down 385 S Broadway, Salem, NH 03079, United States, chances are you’ve passed Trattoria Amalfi and caught a glimpse of its warm lighting and classic Italian charm. I stopped in on a rainy Friday evening after hearing several glowing reviews from locals, and honestly, it felt like stepping into a small coastal town along the Amalfi Coast-without leaving New Hampshire.

The first thing I noticed was the aroma. Garlic sautéing in olive oil, fresh basil, and slow-simmered tomato sauce drifted from the kitchen. It’s the kind of smell that instantly makes you hungry. The dining room strikes a balance between casual diner comfort and old-school Italian trattoria elegance. You can come in wearing jeans, but the plating and service feel special enough for a date night.

Let’s talk about the menu, because that’s where this place really shines. Their pasta dishes are clearly made with care. I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo with grilled chicken, and the sauce was velvety without being heavy. That balance matters. According to the Italian Culinary Institute, authentic Alfredo relies on high-quality butter and Parmigiano-Reggiano rather than excessive cream, and you can taste that thoughtful approach here. The texture was smooth, the seasoning was spot-on, and the chicken was tender and well-marinated.

A friend of mine tried the seafood fra diavolo, and the portion was generous-mussels, shrimp, calamari-all cooked properly. Seafood can be tricky. Overcook it by even a minute and it turns rubbery. Here, everything was firm yet delicate. That tells me the kitchen understands timing and temperature control, which are critical in professional cooking. The National Restaurant Association often emphasizes consistency and food safety as key factors in customer trust, and from what I experienced, this kitchen respects both.

The pizza deserves its own mention. The crust had that ideal contrast: crisp on the outside, airy inside. You could see the slight char from a properly heated oven. I’ve worked in hospitality before, and I know how hard it is to maintain oven temperature during busy dinner rushes. On this visit, the pie came out evenly baked, which speaks to solid kitchen management and process. The Margherita pizza, topped with fresh mozzarella and basil, tasted clean and authentic.

What makes Trattoria Amalfi stand out isn’t just the food-it’s the service. Our server knew the menu thoroughly and gave thoughtful recommendations. When I asked about wine pairings, she suggested a Chianti that complemented the acidity of the tomato-based dishes perfectly. That level of product knowledge builds credibility. It shows training and pride in what they serve.

Online reviews often highlight their generous portions and friendly staff, and from what I saw, those comments are accurate. On busy nights, there might be a short wait, especially on weekends. That’s worth noting if you’re planning a large gathering. Reservations are a smart move. Still, even during peak hours, the staff didn’t rush us. Plates were cleared at the right moment, water glasses refilled without asking-small details that make a big difference.

Another thing I appreciate is consistency. I’ve visited twice now, months apart, and both times the flavors and presentation were steady. In the restaurant world, consistency separates good spots from truly reliable neighborhood favorites. When a kitchen can reproduce the same dish with the same quality over time, that’s not luck-that’s systems, training, and experience.

Pricing is fair for the quality and portion sizes. You’re not paying for flashy gimmicks. You’re paying for solid Italian cuisine, attentive service, and a comfortable setting. For families, couples, or even solo diners who just want a plate of well-made pasta and a glass of wine, this Salem location delivers.

If you value fresh ingredients, thoughtful preparation, and a welcoming atmosphere, this Broadway address has earned its reputation through real effort and genuine hospitality.

  • This place was recommended from a friend. From the outside it doesn’t look like much in a little strip of stores, driven by it 100 times and never noticed it. Snuck in a couple seats at the bar. Bartenders were awesome and very attentive. Got our drink right away. Stated with a salad. Dinners came out quickly. Veal and eggplant Parm big portion side of Penne and Marinara sauce. It was delicious. I had Veal Saltimbocca was Amazing. Highly Recommend.

  • It’s in an older shopping center and doesn’t look like much from the outside. But the moment you step inside, it is beautiful. It was packed so I sat at the bar and the bartender (Craig) took excellent care of me. I ordered the Jerry Jumbo and a glass of red wine. The food was AMAZING (OMG the spicy pink sauce is incredible), the atmosphere is awesome, alcohol selection is fantastic. If I lived here I’d eat here all the time, unfortunately I’m only in town for work.

  • Best Italian food I’ve ever had. I’ve been to this restaurant 3 times and each time I’m so happy we came. The restaurant itself is beautiful inside with paintings of Italy. And I really like the private tucked away booth seating. The wait staff, food, and atmosphere is great every time.

  • ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ By far the best Italian restaurant in New Hampshire — and honestly, the only place outside of Boston’s North End that truly compares! Amalfie’s in Salem, NH is on another level. Every dish tastes like it was made with genuine passion — from the homemade pastas and rich sauces to the perfectly cooked entrees. The portions are generous, the service is always warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a family-run spot in Italy. Whether you’re from the area or driving up from Massachusetts, it’s absolutely worth the trip. No exaggeration — Amalfie’s could hold its own with some of the best spots in the North End.
